The names describe how material is broken, not how large a machine is. Compare the principles and their roles in a line before comparing model numbers.
Jaw crushing: compression between two surfaces
A jaw crusher breaks feed between a moving and a fixed jaw. The feed opening and jaw movement matter to acceptance and throughput. Jaw machines are often used early in a line when large feed must be reduced for downstream stages.
That is not an automatic rule for every project. Abrasiveness, lump shape, and target product still need review.
Impact crushing: rotor energy
An impact crusher uses a fast rotor and impact surfaces to break the feed. It is often considered where reduction and particle shape matter. Depending on the material and design it can work at different stages, while highly abrasive rock makes wear a central question.
Why “which one is better?” fails
Jaw and impact machines solve the task through different mechanisms. One can accept large feed through compression; the other depends more on impact behaviour and product targets. Sometimes they are not competitors at all, but consecutive stages in one circuit.
The useful question is which principle will create the required product from our material with acceptable wear and service demand.
A short selection checklist
Record top feed size and grading, strength, moisture, abrasiveness, and clay. Add target fractions, acceptable fines, operating hours, installation constraints, and equipment before and after the crusher.
When engineering input matters
If rock data is incomplete, test results vary, or the line must make several products, catalogue selection becomes especially risky. Share the inputs with MIDEX and ask for the recommendation’s assumptions as well as the model.
